What is Pilates?Originally invented in the 1920's by Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates Method has evolved into a movement practice which focuses on improving flexibility and strength for the whole body, without building bulk. With an emphasis on creating strong core muscles, Pilates alleviates back pain, and lengthens and streamlines the entire body. Lasting results are achieved by building the "powerhouse" of the body: the abs, hips, butt and lower back working together; all movements are generated from this area outward. While all muscle groups are worked during a session, Pilates movements uniquely strive to challenge the deeper, often neglected abdominal muscles, creating an amazingly strong central core.
